The story of Billabong
Billabong was founded by Australian surfer Gordon Merchant. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Gordon travelled around various places along the east coast of Australia so that he could wear surf shorts for up to 9 months a year.
During his time as a surfer, Gordon invented a surfboard that helped Michael Peterson and Rabbit Bartholomew become windsurfing winners. In 1973, he and his wife began producing handmade surf shorts. With a triple sewing technique that allowed the shorts to resist the elements and shorts became a big hit straight away.
In the 1980s, Billabong was exported to many countries around the world. Gordon began collaborating with experts in the surfing industry. Surfers such as Wayne Bartholomew, Joe Engel, Taj Burrows and Ronnie Burns wore the brand, which contributed to Billabong's popularity.
